working with young people in 2008

Audio Opportunity, PVA MediaLab and Bridport Museum
Application deadline - February 8 2008

PVA MediaLab is seeking 2 facilitators to produce a new project with young people in Dorset. The project (working title 'untitled-title') aims to encourage participants 16-19yrs to engage with and interrogate the Museum archive, with particular reference to the recently established 'Spinning Yarns' project (http://www.spinningyarns.co.uk/).

'untitled-title' is a collaborative sound recording opportunity for up to 8 young people to work with professional musicians or sound artist/composers over a period of 4 days, aiming to encourage active listening and an appreciation of the diversity of language and opinion. 'untitled-title' will focus on improving literacy through the use of audio composition and recording. Participants will work with specialist artist-facilitators to enhance their written or spoken word responses to the Museum collection. The material gathered will be used as the basis for a series of audio recordings, edited by the participants and presented at a showcase event in the museum.

Distribution may include:
a radio feature for podcasting;
a profile on the Museum's project web site;
audio-interactive installation;
material for local radio stations;
an 'audio-environmental installation' - 5.1 surround piece;
stereo for delivery through MP3/CD.

The project will be specifically relevant to young people with low literacy enabling them to explore a medium for story-telling, in its widest interpretation, which is not entirely dependent on the written word. Material may contain elements such as rural isolation, the environment, the heritage of Dorset and positive cultural development.

Fixed fee of £1300 (to include expenses)

Joint applications are welcomed.
ESSENTIAL requirement - Enhanced CRB

To apply please submit one side of A4 detailing your approach to the project and include recent, relevant work. A CV/artist statement is also welcomed.

PVA MediaLab + Fra Newbery Trail Education Project

Application deadline - January 18 2008

PVA MediaLab is seeking 2 artist-facilitators to produce a new project with young people in Dorset.The selected artists will facilitate key skills workshops in stills photography and sound recording, using as a starting point the Fra Newbery paintings in Bridport Town Hall, to explore what is important to young people today and what makes Bridport the place it is.

Participants will develop a portfolio of images and sounds and work with the artists to select material and plan an exhibition. The concept of historical and contemporary heritage both in a personal and civic sense will be the theme for the developing work. Historical or contemporary figures, events or objects could be considered and a personal response from individuals will be encouraged. We anticipate 3 consecutive workshop days and 1.5 days post-production to take place February 18-22. The final project will be exhibited at Bridport Arts Centre Foyer between Tuesday 1 April - Monday 5 May 2008 as part of the Fra Newbery Trail project.
