LabCulture

PVA MediaLab LabCulture 2009 Residency Programme

We are pleased to announce guidelines for the LabCulture Programme 2009.

Artists and practitioners from all disciplines are invited to apply to LabCulture, a week-long intensive residency on the Jurassic Coast focussing on professional development, engagement with digital media, interdisciplinary practice and networking. Based on the studio’s successful ‘incubator’ model, the residency is situated on the 'heritage coast' at Burton Bradstock, Dorset. The incubator will focus on this specific location, supporting artists to develop new work in relation to place, earth science and the natural environment.

The residency offers artists:
- time to focus on production of new material;
- opportunity to pursue their creative process amongst peers;
- support to work within a critical environment;
- opportunity to practically research or take an idea further;
- time to experiment with new ways of working;
- time out from regular work.

We will be resident at the Burton Cliff Hotel, a landmark building (originally a late-Victorian house) on the coast. The building, complete with 1960-70's fixtures, will become a temporary flexi-centre for digital media production and presentation for one week in October 2009.

We propose to offer artists space for their ideas to grow in a cross-disciplinary environment, facilitated by experienced practitioners drawn from the creative and cultural sector. We anticipate building a body of work rich with allusion to Dorset, it's image, heritage and environment: to enhance skills, activate new partnerships and stimulate diverse practice and collaboration. The residency offers an intensive period to work within a critical environment where peer to peer communication and feedback is crucial to the process. Experienced LabCulture artist facilitators work with residents, supporting new, experimental, collaborative work on the Jurassic Coast, Dorset. On the final day of the residency we will present works in progress to an invited audience comprised of practitioners, curators and networking partners.

Residency dates: October 10-18 2009

The scheme is open to practitioners based in the UK. We particularly encourage applications from artists resident and working in the South West region of the UK, with an emphasis on Dorset. The focus is on production of new material and time out from regular work, therefore applicants should be available for the whole period of the residency.
