LifelinesLifelines is a media project by young people from Ferndown and Sherborne in Dorset, facilitated by PVA MediaLab, Bridport, Dorset.
The students wanted to make films about how family break-ups had affected their lives. They had been left caring for siblings, supporting their parents through difficult times or struggling to deal with their own relationships because home life was so stressful. They believed that by making two films (a drama and a documentary) they could share their experiences with others, feel less alone and create a space where others could have their say.
“We’re ok, aren’t we?” is a short fiction film. 13 year old Elle discovers her mother is seeing someone else and is faced with the dilemma of keeping this secret from her sister and dad. Things finally come to a head with disastrous consequences for all the family. The script is constructed as a series of flashbacks. The young writers wanted to create an atmosphere and style which would reflect the shattering of the family. The result is a powerful and disturbing film.
“You’re meant to like them” is a short documentary film. Students at Sherborne Learning Centre talk about their families. The stories are by turns funny, disturbing, moving and uplifting. The film also includes animation and other footage to illustrate and enhance the documentary. Other young people who have watched this film have praised the courage of the participants for their frankness in sharing their experiences.
Lifelines webpages and marketingThese have been created by Hayley Saunders, with the guidance of facilitator Rob Foddering. They include background to the project and “making of” footage and stills as well as the films and links to helpful organisations. Hayley has also adapted her design to be produced as a postcard which will point people to the website. View the website and films here |
